The home of Dave and Connie Windham at the corner of Pine Street and Third Ave. has been chosen for “Garden of the Season” by the Garden Club of Picayune. Dave and Connie have lived in their home for 27 years and have planted their garden as a joint effort.
Their charming garden, filled with color from indigo, knock-out roses, irises, day lilies, lantana, pentas, zinnas, verbenia and more, provide a decorative border anchored by Indian Hawthorne, a butterfly and Fatsia bush. Window boxes add another burst of color with petunias peeking out their colorful heads.
Connie uses rain water that she collects to water her plants. She says her love for gardening came from “Big Mama,” her dad’s mom. Her mother, also an avid gardener, reinforced her love of gardening.
“I try to plant things that have personal meaning to our family,” she says. “I get up in the morning and go to bed at night thinking about what I will plant next.”
The delicate colors from a mixture of flowers all across the front of her cottage yield an English garden effect.
“When we’re distracted by so many circumstances in life, we lose the appreciation for the beauty of Creation all around us,” Connie stated. “The garden is my therapy.”
