Jackson’s City Council has given a Texas-based company permission to run a natural gas pipeline underneath a park.

Under the deal approved Monday, Gulf South Pipeline LP would pay the city $150,000 for permission to drill under Parham Bridges Park in northeast Jackson.

A.C. Jimmerson, the city director of Parks and Recreation, said the $150,000 figure was negotiated up from $28,000.

Mayor Harvey Johnson told the council that the proceeds could be used to help pay for some $270,000 of improvements needed at the park.

The pipe will run along the edges of the park, going under parking lots at the playground and the main entrance.
