County questions ownership of cemetery

The Hancock County Board of Supervisors has dissolved the Rotten Bayou Cemetery committee.
The Rotten Bayou cemetery is nestled in the northwest corner of the Diamondhead community. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in county with gravesites dating back to the 1800s.
Board of Supervisors President Rocky Pullman said the county has maintained the cemetery for the past 60 years.
Supervisors had appointed a five-person committee to oversee operations at the cemetery. However, since Hurricane Katrina, there have been several complaints about the committee.
After voting this past week to dissolve the committee, Pullman said the county needs to see who legally owns the cemetery and then figure out how to better manage it.
