There’s already a street named for him in west Amory.
Soon, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, Lt. Col. Herbert E. Carter of Montgomery, Ala., will have a marker in his honor as well.
Ground was broken Tuesday for that marker, which will be located near West Amory Elementary School.
Carter was not on hand for the ceremony, which took place on his 92nd birthday. He attended school in Amory and moved to Alabama when he was 15 years old, enrolling in the Tuskegee Institute.
Almost 1,000 pilots trained as a segregated Army Air Corps unit in Tuskegee during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were known as the “Red Tails” for the color of the tails of their fighters.
