Miss. soldier killed in Afghanistan

The U.S. Department of Defense says a 21-year-old soldier from the Tishomingo County town of Golden, Miss., was among four soldiers killed June 4 in Afghanistan when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

The department says Army Sgt. Christopher R. Bell. was assigned to the 793rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. Bell joined the Army in July 2008.

Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll, at the Alaska base, said a memorial service will be held for Bell and the other soldiers.

Coppernoll says Bell served at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. before being stationed in Alaska in January 2009.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced. No other details were available.
