Monroe County may be the first tornado-ravaged county to settle up with FEMA for costs related to the April 27 storms.

County administrator Sonny Clay said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has signed off on debris cleanup in Smithville, Wren and other areas. All that’s left is some mop-up work by local crews.

Clay says FEMA is agreeing to reimburse the county for everything from overtime, equipment and road damage to landfill expenses and portable bathroom rentals.

He says the costs could total about $1 million.

Clay says the county was fortunate to have enough money in reserves to be able to respond quickly to the disaster, but needs the money reimbursed to be able to maintain county services and start rebuilding.
