Gautier embarking on $2.5M road paving project

Driving could soon be a bit less bumpy in the Mississippi Gulf Coast city of Gautier.

A $2.5 million road paving project may start within the next two weeks. The money comes from a $7 million bond issue approved this past August by the mayor and city council.

Mayor Tommy Fortenberry says it’s the first bond issue the city has used to pay for paving.

Gautier public works director Dennis Reeves says officials are focusing on fixing the main roads first because those affect the most people.

City Manager Sidney Runnels says the city received no money after Hurricane Katrina for road work, and Gautier had lots of streets that needed repairs.
