The arrival in 1699 of the first Europeans to the Mississippi Gulf Coast was celebrated in Ocean Springs over the weekend.

Ocean Springs Front Beach took a step back to the time when only Native Americans lived along the shores. Actors re-created the arrival of the French.

Organizers say they hope the props, costumes and elaborate staging will get young people interested in the history of the area.
