Shirley House rededication scheduled

The Shirley House, the only military park-related building that was left standing after the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863, will be rededicated Wednesday.

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., will speak at the ceremony at the Vicksburg Military Park.

The Shirley House was named Wexford Lodge by its builder when it was completed in the late 1830s. It was turned over to Judge James Shirley in 1851 and served as a major landmark throughout the Civil War. The home was headquarters for the 45th Illinois Infantry. Union forces also used the home as a smallpox hospital in 1864.
