A fire engulfed a French Quarter building early Thursday, sending flames through the roof before firefighters were able to extinguish it.

No one was injured.

Fire Superintendent Charles Parent said authorities had a report from a witness who saw someone cut a lock and enter the building late Wednesday. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

The fire was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. and was brought under control about 40 minutes later, said Assistant Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell. The department brought 23 units and 110 firefighters to the scene, he said.

“There were flames coming out of the roof when we got here,” McConnell said.

McConnell said he was not sure if the building was occupied, but no rescues were needed.
