A man who was sought in last year’s county-wide drug roundup ran from a Pearl River County Sheriff’s deputy only to turn himself in later.

Chief Investigator Donnie Saucier said the suspect, 31 year-old Brian Travis of 286 Whitesand Rd., in Poplarville, was wanted by the department for the sale of crack cocaine when he was spotted by deputy Russell Miller on Feb. 23.

When Miller saw Travis sitting in a vehicle at the 100 block of Whitesand Road, the deputy knew Travis had a warrant out for his arrest so he attempted to take Travis into custody, Saucier said. However, when Travis saw the deputy, he ran on foot into the nearby woods.

A search for Travis in the wooded area was unsuccessful but when narcotics investigators were called to the scene and conducted an inventory of the vehicle Travis left behind, the investigators found $7,900 in cash. Saucier said the department believes that money was gained through the sale of a controlled substance so cash was seized by the department.

Later, using family members, the department was able to make contact with Travis, who turned him self in about an hour after he fled on foot, Saucier said.

Travis was subsequently booked into the county jail on the warrant for sale of crack cocaine, in addition to two speeding warrants and on a charge of resisting arrest by fleeing, Saucier said.
