Officer goes to Iraq; cases go out

The deployment of a Greenwood police officer to Iraq has lead to the dismissal of 13 criminal cases in municipal court.
The cases include DUIs and drug charges.
Officer Roland Galvan is one of the police department’s two DUI enforcement officers and is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He was called to duty Jan. 4. The cases were dismissed by a municipal judge in February because Galvan couldn’t testify.
Police Chief Henry Purnell says Galvan isn’t expected to return to duty with the department until August 2012.
Purnell says there was nothing that could be done because DUI enforcement officers typically make cases on their own, without other officers accompanying them.
