Hornets hold off Hawks

Poplarville came up with a big win over homestanding Hancock on Saturday afternoon.

Now, the Hornets hope to take their third consecutive win tonight.

Poplarville nipped the Hawks 6-5, the day after beating Bay High in Region 8-4A action.

Hancock took an early 1-0 lead, but J.J. Welch’s two run double put Poplarville ahead and in the third and Mike Smith also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Welch and Derek Martin paced Poplarville’s 10 hit attack with three hits apiece. Martin, the third of a quartet of Hornet hurlers, got the win and Zac Houston earned a save.

The Hornets host Pass Christian tonight in league action.

• After their big region meeting on Friday night, both Picayune and Pearl River Central dropped games on Saturday.

The Blue Devils fell 10-6 to visiting St. Martin.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed, eventually taking a 9-1 lead in the fourth after PRC’s Ritchie Reed drove in a run with an RBI-single.

The Blue Devils rallied for five runs in the sevent. Bull Mixon had a two run home run, and Leighton Spiers had a double. Dylan Spiers took the loss.

• Picayune, meanwhile dropped a 3-2 decision to homestanding Columbia.

Braxton Lee and Eric Smith had two hits apiece for the Maroon Tide. Jonathan Hickman took the loss.

Both PRC and Picayune remained tied for the lead in Region 6-5A play, and both return to league action on the road tonight as PRC travels to Wayne County and Picayune heads to Wiggins to face Stone County. PRC and Picayune are both 5-1 in league play, while Stone is 3-3 and WCHS is 2-4.
