The city of Waveland has laid off seven part-time reserve police officers.
In January, six Waveland police officers were laid off because of budget constraints.
Mayor David Garcia said the part-time officers had not met their 24-hour continuing education requirement,
Police Chief Jimmy Varnell says many of the officers had full time jobs so they couldn’t keep their education hours up.
Garcia says the part-time officers only filled in on vacation days, sick leave or days off or for special events.
Garcia says if the officers meet the requirements they can apply to rejoin the force.
The Waveland Police Department currently employees 18 full-time and two reserve officers.
