New candidates filing and list could still grow

District Two Supervisor Joyce Culpepper is facing two opponents so far, Clark Bryan and Daryl Smith, as of Monday. Smith was one of seven candidates who challenged Culpepper in the Nov. 2 Special Election to fill her late husband’s unexpired term.

Charles Culpepper, died in office on Nov. 24, 2009. Smith and Joyce Culpepper, who had been named interim supervisor on Dec. 2, 2009, by supervisors, ran off the Special Election on Nov. 24. Culpepper won.

After the runoff, Smith said then he planned to run again.

In District Five, incumbent supervisor Sandy Kane Smith, faces two opponents, Willie E. McDaniel and Thomas “Snuffy” Spiers.

In District Three, where incumbent Hudson Holliday is not running because he is a candidate for governor, five candidates have filed: Bobby Strahan, Kelton Smith, Kendall McClinton, Irvin Templet and Dennis W. Dedeaux.

In District 1, incumbent supervisor and board president Anthony Hales faces Jimmy Buckley. Both are Democrats and are the only Democrats to file for local office so far. All the rest have filed as Republicans.

In District 4, incumbent supervisor J. Patrick Lee has no opponents so far.

That all could change since the filing deadline is over a month away on March 1. The first primary is Aug. 2 and the General Election is Nov. 8.

Other local filings are:

Sheriff: David Allison and Joe Smith.

Chancery Clerk: David Earl Johnson.

Circuit Clerk: Adrain Lumpkin. Lumpkin is the county administrator. Sources close to incumbent Circuit Court Clerk Vickie Hariel say she is expected to run for a fourth term.

Tax Collector-Assessor: Gary Beech.

Coroner: Derek Turnage.

County Prosecuting Attorney: Cheryl D. Johnson and Laurie J. Hutchings.

Justice Court Judge North District: James Hal Breland.

Justice Court Judge East District: Farron Moeller, Ray M. Bennett and Donald D. Fail.

Justice Court Judge West District: John Mark Mitchell.

Superintendent of Education: Alan Lumpkin.

Constable North District: Harlan Amacker, Ronnie Walters, Danny Joe Slade and Rossie Creel.

Constable East District: Justin Faia.

Constable West District: Charles “Bogie” Stockstill.
