The USS Cairo, a Civil War-era Union gunboat now preserved at the Vicksburg National Military Park, will be featured on the U.S. Mint’s new “American the Beautiful” quarters arriving in 2011.
The Vicksburg Post reports the quarter will carry the inscription “Vicksburg, Mississippi, 2011.” The image was designed by AIP Master Designer Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
The U.S. Mint also will issue in 2011 commemorative quarters for Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Gettysburg National Military Park, Glacier National Park and Olympic National Park.
Each state and U.S. territory has selected one of its parks or preserved areas to be featured on the quarter.
