Health officials say one new case of West Nile virus has been reported in Mississippi, bringing the state total to nine so far this year.
The Mississippi Department of Health says in a news release Monday that the new case occurred in Madison County. So far this year, there have been three positive cases reported in Leflore County, and one each in Coahoma, Calhoun, Madison, Scott, Tallahatchie and Tate Counties.
Symptoms of West Nile virus may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.
