An 85-year-old Jackson man might not stand trial in the shooting death of his wife because a psychiatrist has found him criminally insane.

McKinley Lott is one of the oldest men ever charged with murder in Jackson.

Lott has said he has no recollection of shooting his wife at their Jackson home on July 12, 2008. Vera Lott died from a shotgun blast to the upper torso.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd has ruled Lott incompetent to stand trial. Last month, Kidd ordered that Lott be sent to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield.

Vera Lott’s brother, Mose James, says he’s unhappy there might not be a trial. James says Lott was out on bond for two years.
