The job of repairing hurricane damage to Deer Island has begun.
WA Louisiana company will spend the next five months filling in the gap Hurricane Katrina cut in the island, just off shore in Biloxi.
Sand is being dredged from a barge about a mile west of the island and is being pumped to another barge docked on Deer Island. When the job is finished, the quarter mile long breach will be gone.
State and federal funds are being used to refurbish the island, at a cost of about $5 million.
