Pennies For Your Park II Design Day was held Wednesday, the 15th, and heralded an end to the Pennies For Your Park II Drawing Contest held in local elementary schools.
Co-Coordinator of the Children’s Committee, Nicole Clark, says, “Early that morning, Allan Hickman, Reba Beebe and I met with the designers from Leathers and Associates. We did a walk- through of the playground and the designer assessed the needs and space for layout.”
Upon completion of the assessment, the group began making the rounds to the schools involved in the contest to speak to the First and Second place winners in each class.
“The designers asked the children questions about their pictures and what they would like to have at the new playground. The kids were really excited and told me that had been practicing their art work ahead of time,” Clark says.
“My personal favorites were a small house for kittens to play in, elevators and solar panels to save money. But if I had to name some of the more common components that all of the schools shared it would have to be the zipline, new monkey bars and more swings.”
Clark continues, “That night we met with the kids, their parents and others in the community. We had about four times the people that we originally expected to attend. In the meeting, we laid out schematic plans for the playground and walked the kids through it so that they could see their ideas included in the plans.”
“Over all it was a great day that showed a lot of community support and excitement.”
