Lady Tide, lady Hornets earn big wins

Both Poplarville and Picayune won big games Tuesday night, and in doing so each took another step towards securing a playoff berth.

In Poplarville, the Lady Hornets pulled out an exciting 2-1 win over Greene County in eight inning.s

Miranda Fazende drove in the game winning run, and had a pair of hits while Sam Gentry also had two hits for the winning team. Gentry also picked up the pitching win.

The defending Class 4A state champions stand 11-7 overall and 5-1 in league play, and needs to win one of its final two league games next week to make the playoffs. After traveling to George County on Saturday, the Lady Hornets face region foes Columbia at home on Monday and then travel to Purvis for a league encounter on Tuesday.

• In Picayune Tuesday night, the Lady Tide knocked off region foe Long Beach 10-0.

Sarah Dodd got the win, and he teammates backed her up with 18 hits.Jennifer Walker had four hits to pace the hit parade, while Clarissa Jones had three hits and Tiffany Devore, Brooke Ladner and Bethany Crawford each had two hits apiece. Crawford cracked a three run triple as well.

Picayune is 13-5 overall and remains in first place in league play at 4-0 and travels to region foe D’Iberville on Thursday.
