Jackson to offer 2-day amnesty

The city of Jackson hopes to collect some of the $10 million in outstanding fines by offering two days of amnesty.
People who owe parking, traffic and certain misdemeanor fines can pay them Thursday and Friday at Jackson police headquarters to avoid jail time or threat of arrest.
City spokesman Chris Mims says the amnesty is one way of getting people to pay. The city collected about $135,000 during a two-day amnesty in 2009.
Besides amnesty days, Mims says the city hired a debt collection company to collect unpaid fines. The company, which started about two months ago, receives a percentage of fees it collects.
