The Hattiesburg school board has interviewed several candidates for the superintendent’s post, and members say another wave of interviews is expected in coming days.

Board of Trustees President Marcus Cathey says the board plans to bring in nine or 10 candidates overall for interviews before a possible second round.

He said that trustees have seen good candidates so far.

The board is seeking a permanent successor to Annie Wimbish, who resigned June 30. Associate Superintendent Jimmy Hopkins is serving as interim leader for the district.

Cathey says the trustees are on track to get a new superintendent in place Jan. 1, despite missing a Sept. 1 deadline for naming the successor.
