Cossar State Park to close in October

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says George P. Cossar State Park on Enid Reservoir will close Oct. 31, putting 11 people out of work.
Agency spokesman Jim Walker said the closure is necessary because of a 20 percent cut in general funding — about $4.2 million.
The agency also plans to transition from six district offices to three regional offices and close a warehouse in Jackson.
Walker said the cuts will save $700,000 annually.
Walker called it a “sad day for the agency” because it’s never had to close a park before.
Cossar was running at an annual deficit of about $300,000. It has 13 cabins and 83 campsites.
