Flash floods that swamped parts of the central Mississippi city of Forest on Thursday are blamed for at least one death and several flooded homes.

Alvin Seeney, Scott County’s Emergency Management Agency director, said the fatality was a woman whose car hydroplaned and hit a tree. Her identity was not immediately available.

Alan Gerard, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said 5.3 inches of rain soaked the area in 24 hours, with almost 5 inches of that falling from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Seeney said at least 15 people were rescued from flooded homes. Some of the house were inundated with more than a foot of water.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation closed U.S. Highway 80 and State Highway 35 in Forest due to the flooding.
