Audit: Miss. Legislature’ expenses down $3M

The cost of running the Legislature ran $18 million between June 4, 2009 and May 3, 2010, according to a new report from the state auditor’s office.

The report, release Thursday, showed total expenses, which includes salaries of lawmakers and legislative employees, supplies, operating and expenses and other costs, for the 13-month period.

Last year’s auditor’s report showed the total legislative expense was about $21.8 million over a 13-month period.

Salaries, fringe benefits and other compensation to lawmakers — from June 2, 2009 to May 3, 2010 — totaled $10.9 million for 122 House members and 52 senators. That figure is down from $12.9 million from the same period a year ago.
