Both the Poplarville Hornets and Lady Hornets fared well at the Class 4A state track and field meet that took place recently in Pearl.
Jordan Travis paced the Hornets to a 9th place finish and Stacey Hagenson led the Lady Hornets to a seventh place finish at the annual event.
Jordan Travis captured the only state title for Poplarville, as he won the 3,200 meter run in a time of 10.32.98. He was denied a second state championship in exciting fashion in the 1,600 meter run, as Byhalia’s Godfrey Fayne won with a time of 4.46.80 and Travis finished second at 4.46.90.
Jordan Travis also finished sixth in the 800 meter run, just ahead of teammate Phillip Travis who finished seventh.
Phillip Travis finished seventh as well in the 400 meter run.
Neeko Lockhart finished fifth for Poplarville in the pole vault.
The Hornets finished with 29 points.
On the girls side of the ledger, Hagenson finished second twice, in both the 3,200 meter run as well as the 1,600 meter run. She finished behind All-American distance runner Cory Magee of Pass Christian in both events.
Magee also won the 800 meter run, and Hagenson finished third in that race.
Also, Landon Smith finished sixth in the 400 meter dash and the 4X400 meter relay team finished fifth.
In the field events, Raven Pernell finished fourth in the discus while Tkeyah Hart finished fourth in the pole vault.
The Lady Hornets finished the meet with 39 points.
Pontotoc High won both the girls and boys state championships in Class 4A.
