Tourism officials on the Mississippi Gulf Coast will be asking BP PLC to pay $7.5 million a month for a national advertising campaign to overcome coverage of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The Harrison County Tourism Commission plans to focus on casinos, entertainment and family attractions — but not the beaches.

Targeted markets for the television ads will be Atlanta, Birmingham, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Jackson, Charlotte, Memphis, Nashville and Dallas.

The commission is using about $600,000 from its reserve fund and money for its fall advertising to start the campaign.
