A Columbus Public Works Department laborer has been arrested for using a city truck to steal from a building at the city landfill.

Police say 43-year-old Kenneth J. Smith was charged with petty larceny and burglary.

A patrol officer was checking the city landfill Saturday night when the officer noticed a vehicle parked outside the locked gate.

Officers located a building at the landfill that had been entered and items taken, along with the city truck.

Officials say Smith has worked for the city for 18 years.
