Funeral services for former District 5 Supervisor Bettye Stockstill will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Roseland Park Baptist Church.
Stockstill died on Wednesday at her home in Carriere after an extended illness.
Burial will be in Carriere Cemetery. Rev. Bud Putnam will officiate at the service.
Stockstill was named to the board shortly after her husband, Beat 5 Supervisor Troy Stockstill, died in office in September 2005. She won election in her own right in November 2006 in a special election to fill the unexpired term in husband’s first term.
She then ran unsuccessfully for a full four-year term in August 2007. She was defeated in the Republican Primary by current District 5 Supervisor Sandy Kane Smith.
She was the first woman to be appointed to the board and to be elected in her own right to the board. She also was the first woman to ever serve as president of the board.
