A recycling program to clean up illegal tire dumping in Shelby County was so successful that more than 45,000 tires were collected in just three days.

Trucks and cars filled with dozens of tires created a long line Tuesday at the recycling center in Memphis, where residents could get $1 for each used tire. The tires will be hauled to a recycling facility in Mississippi.

The Commercial Appeal reported that the Shelby County Commission could allocate more funds to the successful program when it reconvenes in January.

Security guard Willie Nathaniel brought in two loads this week from his South Memphis neighborhood that he says is “ugly” with tires.
