The Mississippi Tax Commission has approved the sale of liquor on Sundays in Tupelo, but it won’t take effect until January at the earliest.
Commission spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said tax commissioners voted Tuesday on Tupelo’s request to allow the sales in restaurants from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
However, she said, an official order probably won’t be signed until another meeting on Jan. 5.
The Tupelo City Council voted last month to petition the state agency for Sunday liquor sales after deciding earlier to allow Sunday beer and light wine sales.
Beer and light wine currently are available seven days a week and every day except Sunday for liquor.
