Several rivers and creeks flooded Tuesday in south Mississippi, including in Pearl River County, and the water was expected to continue rising in places even as the rain pushed out of the state.

Jared Allen, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Jackson, said the creeks and rivers were expected to crest overnight or early Wednesday and then recede. High water was reported from the Hattiesburg area down to the Gulf Coast.

Allen said forecasters expect dry and cooler weather Wednesday, but more rain is expected Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Allen said some roads and parking lots were flooded in south Mississippi but no serious problems had been reported other than a few homes struck by lightening.
