Restitution hearing set in Melton duplex raid

A restitution hearing is scheduled for Jan. 20 for one of late Jackson Mayor Frank Melton’s bodyguards in the 2006 sledgehammer attack on a suspected crack house.

Melton and the bodyguards, who were Jackson police officers at the time, were accused of leading the vigilante raid on a duplex because Melton believed it was a drug den.

Prosecutors said a motion filed in U.S. District Court that they haven’t reached an agreement with former bodyguard Marcus Wright on the amount of restitution he should pay in the case.

Melton died this year and was never convicted of a crime related to the raid.

The bodyguards both pleaded guilty to lesser charges and were sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution.
