Picayune splits two games with Hancock

Picayune and Hancock split a pair of prep basketball games on Friday night.

The Lady Hawks ended the Lady Tide’s four game win streak with a late rally to pull out a 51-39 win. Hancock moved to 10-3 with the win while Picayune dropped to 9-3 with the loss to the Lady Hawks.

Picayune actually led 39-31 with 1:29 left in the third quarter. Hancock, however, scored the final 20 points of the game and held Picayune scoreless for almost 10 minutes to pull out the win.

Cristen McGuire led Hancock with 15 points, while Andrea Jackson scored a game high 17 points to pace Picayune and Melody McGill added nine.

• In the boys game, Picayune trailed early but rallied to take a two point lead at halftime and then controlled the fourth quarter for a 56-47 win.

The win evens the Maroon Tide’s record at 5-5 on the season, and avenged a loss to the Hawks few weeks ago as well. Hancock drops to 3-10 on the year.

Picayune led by as much as 15 in the fourth quarter, before Hancock cut it to four with a minute left but the Maroon Tide held on for the win.

Vince Gable paced Picayune with a game high 21 points, while Derrione Stewart and Scottie Merrill added nine apiece to the winning cause.

Alex Myers had 14 and Alen Deschamp 13 for Hancock.

Both Picayune teams travel to Poplarville Monday.

Picayune will also host the annual holiday tournament on Dec 28-29.
