Memphis police have arrested a Mississippi man they said was selling counterfeit Nike shoes at a flea market.

Officers charged 37-year-old Mamadou Sy of Robinsville, Miss., with criminal simulation over $10,000 after an officer paid him $50 for a pair of shoes.

Andy Wilson, an investigator who works on behalf of Nike, said many booths at the flea market in South Memphis sell phony items.

Nike has a distribution center in Memphis.

Wilson said the investigation that resulted in Sy’s arrest on Saturday began a few months ago. Police confiscated 312 pairs of counterfeit Nike shoes. Wilson said if they had been legitimate, the shoes would have been worth more than $30,000.

He said dealers buy the knockoffs for under $20 per pair.
