MDA: Deadline looms for elevation grant program

A deadline is approaching in the Mississippi Development Authority’s grant program to elevate coastal homes.
An MDA news release says the agency will complete applicant intake and closings by Dec. 31. MDA says $25 million in federal grants have been used to assist Gulf Coast homeowners in meeting flood-elevation standards that went into effect after Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the region in 2005.
MDA’s disaster recovery chief, Jon Mabry, says the grants are only available to homeowners who received assistance from a Katrina housing program but didn’t have flood insurance.
Up to $30,000 can be awarded to help offset costs of raising a primary residence.
