Feel the burn: Tupelo pushes group fitness efforts

Tupelo Mayor Jack Reed Jr. says he’s “blown away” by the number of people taking part in a local fitness effort.
Nearly 4,000 people participated in the Mayor’s Marathon by trying to walk, jog or run the equivalent of a marathon during November.
Most who turned in mileage logs completed the marathon, while others racked up several miles but fell short of the 26.2-mile goal.
Participation was quadruple the initial estimate of 1,000. The numbers could rise as more mileage records arrive at City Hall.
The mayor’s Task Force on Health will launch an initiative in January called Trim Down Tupelo. People will compete on teams, in the style of TV’s “The Biggest Loser.”
