A Jackson County woman died in a house fire after initially escaping, then returning inside to retrieve belongings.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd told The Sun Herald newspaper that the body of 31-year-old Lisa Haygood was found about 10 feet inside her door. The fire happened Sunday morning.

When the fire started, Haygood and James McCool escaped with a child, then Haygood and McCool went back inside for belongings. McCool made it safely out, but not Haygood.

The house, which was destroyed in the fire, is just north of Vancleave. The Vancleave Volunteer Fire Department responded. Byrd said a portable heater may have caused the fire.
