Challenger Twila Crabtree garnered 127 votes to incumbent Pearl River County school board member Margie Creel’s 114 votes to unseat the one-term board member in the race for the District 5 seat in Tuesday’s election.

About than one percent of the registered voters in the District 5 race voted. There are 2,035 registered voters in school district 5. A total of 241 cast ballots.

Both candidates worked the district hard in the evenings and on weekends, but despite their efforts the turnout was very low.

In the race for a seat on the Lumberton line district in northern Pearl River County, challenger Kevin Dufrene beat incumbent Craig Ledet 32 to 23. About one percent cast ballots in that election, too.

The Gumpond precinct has 575 registered voters and only a total of 55 turned out to vote.

The Lumberton line district takes in a part of northern Pearl River County. Lumberton is in Lamar County.

With Crabtree’s win, there will be two new school board members on the Pearl River County school system board.

On Oct. 15, the school board named Bonnie Sanders to fill the unexspired term of Byron Stockstill who resigned on Aug. 12, citing a conflict with his work schedule.

Sanders was appointed because Stockstill’s term was more than six months away from the regularly scheduled District 2 election.
