Lady Hornets fall in title tilt

CARRIERE — In what was perhaps the first of as many as four or even five meetings between a pair of South Mississippi hoops powers, round one went to Bay High.

The Lady Tigers knocked off Poplarville 60-55 in the girls championship game of the Pearl River Central Tip-Off Tournament Saturday night. Bay High is 4-0 on the year and the Lady Hornets are now 2-1.

“I told the girls this was good for them because now they can see how they have to raise their level of play,” veteran Poplarville head coach Annette Smith said. “We didn’t play bad, they just hit some real big shots, especially from the outside.”

Jeremi Roboteau nailed six 3-pointer’s for the Lady Tigers, and finished with a game high 23 points. Policia Travis led Poplarville with 14 points, while Demi Beason and Daquari Raine chipped in with 11 points apiece.

Both Poplarville teams host Stone High Tuesday.

The girls’ title tilt was one of six games on the final day of the event. Of those six games, five involved local teams.

Both Picayune squads came up with wins against Purvis, as the Maroon Tide blasted the Tornadoes 47-26 and the Lady Tide won 51-26.

The Picayune boys used a 15-2 advantage in the third period to break open the game. Marcus Rawls paced Picayune with 13 points while Vince Gable and Jorion Littles each added eight points apiece. The Maroon Tide is 1-2 on the season.

The Lady Tide moved to 3-1 on the year with the win, as Andrea Jackson scored a game high 14 points, Melody McGill added 11, Keanna Magee 9 and Sharonda Jackson eight points.

Both Picayune teams will hit the road Tuesday to take on the Purvis teams in a rematch.

Both PRC teams were in action as well Saturday, as the Lady Devils beat Moss Point 57-44. The Lady Devils move to 2-2 with the win, and PRC had four girls in double digits as Natasha Holloway scored 15 points, Bria Pitts added 14, Megan Calcote 11 and Caroline Lumpkin 10 to the winning cause.

The Blue Devils fell to 1-3 losing to undefeated Bay High 50-28. Jordan Fairconetue scored 14 for PRC.

Both PRC teams host Forrest County AHS on Monday.

• In action Friday night, the Poplarville Hornets fell to Purvis 69-59 falling to 0-2 on the season. David Gilmore and J. Travis scored 11 each for the Hornets, while Rod Means and Jalen Raine added 10 points apiece.

Also on Friday, Bay High blasted the Lady Devils 70-27. Pitts scored eight for PRC, while Raina Lyons had 24 for BHS and Roboteau added 23.

• Also, both the boys and girls teams from Picayune and Pearl River Central will both compete in the county tourney along with Hancock’s boys and girls beginning on Thursday at Hancock High.
