Two Pascagoula residents have filed a petition in Jackson County Circuit Court to halt a project that could alleviate overcrowding problems at the county jail.

Tyres Autrey and Ernestine Black filed the petition last week, following a vote by the Pascagoula City Council to allow the placement of two temporary structures within the security fences of the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

Jackson County Board of Supervisors President Manly Barton told The Mississippi Press it’s unclear how the appeal will affect the project.

Barton said the board could discuss the issue in executive session during a meeting on Monday.

Supervisors have said the county needs the pair of 50-by-90-foot lockdown jail pods, which are prefabricated structures, to house about 140 inmates.
