Gov. Haley Barbour has appointed a black lawyer to a judgeship — the same one who earlier criticized the governor for his lack of diversity when it comes to judicial appointments.

Barbour has chosen Malcolm O. Harrison of Jackson to serve the unexpired term of former Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter, who resigned following his conviction in a judicial bribery scheme.

Harrison is a past president of the Magnolia Bar Association. The group had urged Barbour to appoint a black attorney to succeed DeLaughter. The association said Barbour had not picked a black to serve on the bench in any of his 20 appointments since he’s been in office.
