Ellisville residents have voted to start allowing the sale of beer in their south Mississippi town.

City Clerk Kathy Brewer told the Hattiesburg American that the vote Tuesday was 367 for the beer sales and 313 against.

It was a low turnout in a city with about 4,400 residents and 2,000 registered voters.

Mayor Tim Waldrup remained neutral on the issue. He said after the election that Ellisville had voted for “continued change and economic growth.”

The mayor said he will work with aldermen this month to outline regulations for beer sales. Waldrup estimated beer will generate about $200,000 in sales tax the first year.
