The Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau Board will apply for a $337,000 grant for major upgrades to playwright Tennessee Williams’ historical home.

Tourism director James Tsismanakis tells The Commercial Dispatch in Columbus that the house will look virtually the same after the work is completed.

He says the walls where the floor-to-ceiling chimneys run will be built to look as though the chimneys are still in place. The cast-iron fireplace facades will be returned, and false chimney stacks will be placed on the new roof.

Funding will be requested from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright was born in Columbus in 1911.
