A man was in custody Friday after being accused of fatally shooting his brother and shooting at police during a standoff in Oxford.

Police Chief Michael Martin said officers, responding to a 911 call, encountered an armed man in the backyard of a home. As officers approached, the man ran inside. A short time later, officers heard gunfire.

“The suspect came out into the garage of the home and fired at officers and ducked back into the house,” said Martin, who added that no one outside was hurt by the gunfire. “During this time, a female was able to escape.”

Martin said it was determined later that the woman was the family’s cleaning lady, who told officers that the suspect, identified as Bilethon Autry, 24, had shot and killed his brother inside the home and that her father was hiding in the house in the attic.

The victim was identified as Charlie Ray Hodges, 50.

The department’s SWAT team arrived on scene but negotiators could not establish any communication with Autry, Martin said. The team then forced their way inside the house and took him in custody.

Autry, who was taken to the Lafayette County Detention Center, was not injured nor was the woman’s father. Charges are pending against Autry, who Martin said was believed to have been recently released from a mental facility.
