Police were searching for possible suspects in the weekend beating death of a 62-year-old man in downtown Natchez.

Witnesses said John E. Henderson was found lying on the ground Friday night with injuries to the back of his head. He was discovered shortly after a group of men had rushed around him.

The Natchez Democrat reported that Henderson was taken, alive, to Natchez Regional Medical Center. He died Saturday, after being transferred to a hospital in Jackson.

Adams County Coroner James Lee says Henderson died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold says officers were trying to determine what kind of weapon was used to bludgeon Henderson. The man’s wallet was not taken.
