Authorities say a Mississippi State University student is charged with filing a false police report that someone snatched her purse.

The university announced the charge in a news release but it did not name the student.

Dean of Students Thomas Bourgeois said false reports are dangerous for the entire campus because they unnecessarily divert valuable police resources.

The student allegedly lied when she said her purse was taken near Sessums Hall on Sunday.

Bourgeois said the charge carries up to a $1,000 fine and up to one year in prison.
