Hattiesburg police have charged a Texas man with possession of more than 1,700 pounds of marijuana after a traffic stop on Interstate 59.

Officers arrested 34-year-old Antonio Alonzo of Weslaco, Texas, on Sunday and charged him with possession with intent to deliver.

Hattiesburg police spokesman Synarus Green says officers became suspicious because of Alonzo’s nervous behavior after they stopped his tractor trailer in the northbound lane for a traffic violation.

The drugs were hidden in a load of avocados.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Alonzo had hired a lawyer.
