The Justice Department, which monitors elections to ensure fairness to minorities, says it is sending election observers to six Mississippi cities for Tuesday’s municipal elections.
The observers will be in Como, Drew, Greenwood, Isola, Louise and Meridian. They will monitor elections in the jurisdictions to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and other federal voting rights statutes.
Each year, the Justice Department deploys hundreds of observers to monitor elections across the country.
